Boxing WHO IS CHAMP
Now on an interesting news on why sometimes boxing shoots itself in the foot. I wrote recently about MMA vs Boxing, “Another advantage is that UFC is the premier mixed martial arts division and if you are the UFC champion, you are the champion whereas WBO, IBF, WBA, and WBC have their own champions and we have can have as many as 68 champions and I doubt the top boxing writers could list who is champion in each of these sanctioning body. .Dana White of UFC has proved to be superior in promoting his sport than the main promoters of boxing who seem to think of the next big fight but not beyond that.” We just had a competitive great fight between the two best heavyweights, and we crowned an undisputed heavyweight champion, Oleksandr Usyk as he defeated Tyson Fury. IBF has decided in their wisdom to strip Usyk if he chooses to fight Fury in a rematch. While I understand that Croatia Filip Hrgovic wants his shot at a heavyweight title but there are two realities, the first is that Usyk and Fury are the two best heavyweight and two, it is the best money-making fight and the one fight that fans want to see.
Hrgovic is looking to fight British fighter Daniel Dubois June 1st in Saudi Arabia and IBF is considering making this as a possible IBF championship fight. This is why Boxing is losing to MMA, because Dana White would not allow an undisputed champion to lose a championship belt if he chooses a rematch in the UFC. White would even promote the fight if the fight stood to make money. Here is the kicker, the winner gets to fight Anthony Joshua, who already lost twice to Usyk. Let take one more thing, Usyk at the age oof 37 has little time to make big bucks plus his country in a fight for its survival so maybe the IBF can wait until after the rematch. IBF may be excited about a Hrgovic-Dubois fight, but the rest of the boxing world wants a Fury-Usyk battle. IBF shows why boxing fans get frustrated with boxing. You had a great fight, and fans are now hungry for more, but you have a sanctioning body that decides that maybe we need yet another champion.
Usyk has been suspended fighting in Great Britain from British Boxing commission until June 2nd, even though no one is certain why but suspected it was due to injuries from his victory over Fury. My own view is that this is nothing burger and not even worth the effort to do since any rematch will be long after that date and somehow I don’t believe that British isle will get the fight.
Ryan Garcia story keeps getting worse putting in question his victory over Devin Haney. He flunked his second drug test and while he still denies he used anything illegal or he has ever had a history in the past, there are no questions he acted erratic. He chugged a beer at weight in, came in three pounds overweight and leaving people wondering what was going on.. Garica was considered the heavier puncher and showed that as he knocked down Haney three times but how much was that power natural power or due to performance enhancing drugs? It will be interesting to see what state commissions and sanctioning bodies will do? The possibility of a suspension has to be considered and certainly his victory over Haney needs to be vacated if not reversed.
Garcia viewed Haney as that fight that would change perception but coming in overweight denied him a shot of winning a championship outright and now the PED controversy now puts even his biggest moment in boxing in jeopardy.

Trump, Biden and 2024 Elections and the World
This is the story of two people, one who I follow on twitter and one I got to know during times on the Donelson Files. One is a conservative who has extreme doubts about Trump and the other a woman of the left.
In the case of the conservative, he has made a case against Trump for the past few years and why he should not be our nominee and added we should leave the President slot empty. Unlike many never Trumpers I have observed, he is under no illusion that Joe Biden is simply bad and wont’ pull the lever for him. The problem that I have is, what choice do we have since one of these two will be President.
And my liberal friend is intent on believing that Trump is a fascist. As I wrote last August, “It can be argued that we have to fear the present administration more and its violations of civil liberties including working with social media to censor stories. We saw during the end of the Obama administration, our FBI pursuing an investigation to keep Trump from winning the election and then later, uses the same false story of Russian collusion as the basis for impeachment. The FBI continued the investigation despite knowing the story was false as did President Obama and Vice-President Biden. Of course, Hillary knew since she was the one who started the false stories…In the Biden administration, we have seen pro-life arrested on the flimsy of excuses or parents viewed as domestic terrorists and of course the massive censorship efforts on the Covid. I could go on, but you would be hard press to find a similar record during the Trump administration for it was Trump who was the victim of the Deep state machinations.”
If anything, there is a far greater threat from the Democrats and Joe Biden of America slipping into a dictator ship than under Trump. Trump was President for four years and I don’t remember the concentration camps being set up or did I miss that? Trump had a chance to prosecute Hillary Clinton for her wanton disregard for national security and lack of protection classified information with her personal server but chose not to. This good deed has been rewarded by Democrats attempt to bankrupt Trump and his family while trying to put him in jail on the flimsy of evidence. A sign of a Banana Republic is when you attempt to jail your political opponents especially if they have a chance to defeat you.
The conservative twitter friend has noticed Biden foreign policy and his abandonment of Israel and the rise of antisemitism on the left. I wrote after October 7th, “The recent Hamas attack on Israel may have expanded as it is being reported that Iranian backed Hezbollah are attacking from the North. The pincer movement if true shows Iran making a bold mood to attack Israel while sending a message to the Sunni states the price they pay if they work with Israel, directly or indirectly. What is obvious is that Obama/Biden strategy of an integrated Middle East with Iran as a centerpiece has been a disaster and one of the most ill-conceived foreign policy mistakes, period. World is more unstable today it was under Trump, and it is getting worse. What we are witnessing the complete failure of Obama/Biden worldview…This disaster had its roots in the Obama Administration. The Obama view was ascendant Iran would be a counterbalance to Israel and like previous administration, view the Middle East problems through the prism of Palestinian-Israeli conflict plus this move toward Iran was also supposed to counter our allies just as the Saudi’s. A balance of power existing among the powers of the region and this balance of power would force Israel hand in dealing with the Palestinians and reduce America’s footprint in the Middle East…This regional restructuring was Obama’s version of realism, but it was not that. If you want to reduce your presence in the Region it would help to have energy independent policy but both Obama and Biden went green which depends upon minerals produced by China.”
It has gotten worse as Biden restricted intelligence to Israel, delayed arm shipment if they went into Rafal and Biden has yet to condemn the antisemites in his own party but instead is begging them for votes. Representative Tlaib, who is a real Jew hating Marxist, has not once been condemned by Biden but he is sure anxious that her constituents vote for him. He is willing to sacrifice Israel for votes of Jew haters.
Consider how Israel is treated compared to Ukraine. Joe Biden and Democratic leaders (I am looking at Senator Schumer) have called for regime change in Israel but has told the Ukrainian government they can cancel elections. He has impeded Israel almost every step of the way including Rafal, but he has given weapons to Ukraine to strike Russian proper. Russia under Putin is now part of an Axis of evil like Iran and Iranian proxies including Hamas so there is a legitimate reason to be made to support Ukraine. Biden is still hoping to strike a deal with Iran who is the puppet master behind Hamas.
We can debate what United States policy in Ukraine. I wrote January of this year, “Ukraine is interesting case point and not necessarily an easy case study. The one thing that everyone agrees or should agree, that it is not in our interest to involved American troops in Ukraine. The problem has been that the Biden Administration has failed to garner bipartisan support among the American people for aiding Ukraine nor have there been an endgame defined for what is considered a victory or acceptable to our side and Ukrainians. There are many who will not view this in our national interest, but others could argue that if Russia succeed in Ukraine, this could encourage China to move against Taiwan. Using the ideas behind Weinberger doctrine, policy makers need to make case if this is in our interest and how our long-term interest is being served. If China is our number rival, does this enhance or disrupt our objectives against China? It is the responsibility for Biden to explain to the American people why Ukraine matters and what support for Ukraine need to prevail. For many Americans, there is no real national interest in aiding Ukraine when our own borders are open and wondering when the billions flowing to Ukraine will end? …As for the Ukraine, is it similar to helping mujahideen to defeat the Russians in Afghanistan? After the Russian invasion, we aided the mujahideen against the Russians and they provided the blood and we the money and arms. In the case of the Ukraine, there is no support for American troops to be involved in the defense of Ukraine and that Ukraine fate is up to the Ukrainian people. Since Ukraine is not NATO country, there is no reason to involved European troops nor will NATO get involved as they already rejected Ukraine acceptance in NATO as long as the war continues. Any acceptance of Ukraine into NATO has to wait until the conflict ends…Within the Republican primary, Republican candidates shows differences, but there are some similar takes. Nikki Haley’s argument is that there is a connection between Tawain and Ukraine, if we fail to support Ukraine or China may view Taiwan as vulnerable whereas others fear that our we are concentrating on the Ukraine at the expense of the Chinese threat? The reasoning begins with using up our own military stock and the billions we have spent with no end game in sight. The one thing that everyone agrees with, no United States troop will enter the conflict to aid the Ukrainians and it is their war to win or lose. ..The question is how much support is too much and what is the end goal? Has the aid been parcel out bits by bits and in a half-hearted fashion? Has Biden’s administration delay in providing M-1 tank and F-16 fighters violated the dictum that forces should be committed wholeheartedly or not at all? And what are the clearly defined political and military objectives? What is victory? And how does the definition of victory change in the course of war? During Korean war, once the Chinese joined the fight, the objective went from unifying the entire the Korean peninsula as one entity favorable to the West to merely defending the status quo of independent South Korea not controlled by communists. South Korea has zoomed ahead of North Korean since then and is not just a developed nation economically but is a leading military power in the region. The Weinberger doctrine makes it clear foreign policy and military activities need to be reassessed. ..In the case of the Ukraine, a NATO official hinted that a negotiated peace would allow Ukraine to be part of NATO and Russia in control of eastern portion of Ukraine. Ukraine gets the protection of NATO in the future and aligned with NATO and EU, has a chance to provide its own economic miracle as a counter to Russia. Certainly, having a military power of quarter of million soldiers with armed citizenry behind it will provide security for much of central Europe, the Nordic and Baltic states along with Poland which is in the process of strengthening their military. The Polish-Ukraine alliance will include a minimum of 500,000 soldiers, well trained and with the latest military equipment. Poland economy is on the verge of overtaking Great Britain by the end of the decade and many of the Baltic and Nordic states have their own sound economics bordering Russia. This gives both United States and NATO option if Central European nations are capable of defending against Russia in the future. This could be seen as a military objective in which followers of a modest foreign policy could get behind. This is one policy that both Haley and DeSantis could agree on along most Republicans. There will be some debate on whether Ukraine should be a member of NATO, but the reality is that in order to gain a peace treaty, Ukraine has to be guaranteed some security arrangements against future excursion from Russia.”
As I stated on the Frontier of Freedom weekly report, we have three options, one surrender Ukraine to Russia and face future wars in Central Europe and Scandinavia. (Recently one of Putin’s allies mention it would be nice to have Poland and Finland part of Russia. When these people say these things, believe them.) The other two options begin with complete removal of Russians from Ukraine but is that still possible? As long Putin is in charge of Russia, he will fight to the last Russian to conquer Ukraine. The other is a truce. The latter is similar to Korean solution not perfect, but it will allow Ukraine to rebuild their country and more importantly, as long as the West is prepared to secure Ukraine borders that exist, then we are talking a well trained 250,000 soldiers combined with other NATO including Poland troops against any future Russian invasion. If you put together Sweden, Norway, Finland, Polish Army along with Ukrainian army, you are talking at least 750, 000 to nearly a million men guarding central Europe and even the Artic ocean, armed with latest technology. That essentially means that Americans troops may not be required to defend Europe. (By the end of this century it is estimated that the Polish Army will have the largest land army in Europe.)
That also means both political parties need to rethink their own objectives for many in American first movement who been willing to ditch Ukraine as not in our national interest may want to reexamine the idea that a truce will give us NATO plus Ukraine in a position to defend Europe without American troops, giving America more liberty to pursue a more rigorous foreign policy in the Pacific and Indian Ocean against China.
In the Middle East, the Trump policy of forming an alliance between Sunni states and Israel was working before Biden blew it up. Can we go back to that policy?
And it is time to realize that while terms like Nazis and Fascist are thrown around, we might want to examine what a 21st Nazis regime looks like. Strategy page detailed Hamas plan for Israel, “Documents collected, and interviews conducted by Israeli newspaper Haaretz revealed that senior Hamas leaders had a plan for what they would do if they somehow invaded and conquered Israel. First, Palestinian occupied Israel would be divided up into several cantons, each ruled by a Hamas leader. The plan included details on which Israelis would be killed, expelled, or forced to remain because they were educated Jews and experts in the areas of medicine, engineering, technology, and civilian and military industry.” The end of Israel and along with their sponsor Iran Hamas is what Nazis regime looks like. Winning: What Hamas Planned To Do In Israel (strategypage.com) Trump may be many things but a Nazis or Fascist he is not. Hamas as a group are Nazis and those politicians like Representative Tlaib and others who are vocal supporter of Hamas are supporting Nazis rather they realize it or not. Tlaib does know what Hamas is and yeah, I will say it, she is Nazis.
Which leaves us when dealing with Trump and Biden? I didn’t vote for Trump in the 2024 Iowa caucus but will vote for him in 2024 for the simple reason, Biden is far worse. Trump did not instruct his DOJ to put his political opponents on trial, but Biden has. Trump left Biden with a safer world than what Biden will leave Trump if Trump is elected. Ukraine was at peace under Trump, but now we have witnessed the bloodiest war in Europe and at least a million of civilians and soldiers on both sides have already died. Middle East was as peaceful as Middle East could be when Trump left office, but not now under Biden. Iran was suffering economically and there was a chance for a coalition left in place to confront Iran but now that has to be rebuilt. China is threatening Tawain and the Philippines under the brilliance of Biden’s foreign policy team. I could go on.
I criticized Trump handling of Covid and was right with my criticism but then so was Ron DeSantis, Kris Noem, Kim Reynolds, and Brian Kemp. The lockdown were a failures and various Vaccine, and mask mandates were equally a failure so hopefully a Second Trump term will learn but I know Biden was not better on Covid and you can even make the case that more people died from Covid under Biden equally inept leadership and much of the policy followed in the wake of Covid has led to our present inflation and other issues with the economy. Biden has proven to be a threat to civil liberties, his foreign policy has been a disaster including his treatment of Israel and that alone will be enough to vote against him. His energy policy against fossil fuels and his promotion of renewables will end up aiding China and hurt the cause of cheap domestically energy here at home. Then there is the half century of Biden’s family profiting from Joe Biden’s time as a public official. We had no more corrupt politician as President than Biden in my lifetime. You may not like Trump but then who do you vote for? Because the alternative is Biden.

Usyk Wins Now Undisputed Champion
Tyson Fury faced off Oleksandr Usyk in a battle of undefeated fighters for the Heavyweight championship of the work. Fury has proven to be a unique fighter, a big fighter who could box and punch and Usyk is a two division champion, former cruiserweight champions before he took the Heavyweight title when he defeated Anthony Joshua and Fury high point as a fighter was his trilogy with Wilder in which he survived a two knockdown to get a draw in their first fight and then winning the next two with stoppage. The third fight of their trilogy was a brutal fight in which both men hit the canvas.
The question that remains is what Fury or Usyk we will see. In his last fight, Fury barely escaped with a split decision over Francis Ngannou in Ngannou’s first boxing match after a great career in the MMA. Usyk won in a knockdown over the Daniel Dubois but before that final stoppage, he went down with a body shot deemed a low blow. Usyk came in this fight as the smaller fighter and Fury had a higher knockout percentage. If one was a betting person, Fury was more likely to knock out Usyk than the reversed. If Fury, who defeated Wilder in their last two fights, Fury would win or so I thought.. If the Fury that showed up in Ngannou’s fight then Usyk can win by decision, but I be honest, Fury came into shape and was lighter than his fight with Ngannou. .
In reviewing data before the fight, Usyk used his jab 54% during his fights, whereas Fury throws his power shots 56%. The average Heavyweight throw 44 punches per round and Fury is close to the average with 44.8 average punches whereas Usyk threw nearly 50 punches per round. Both men came into this fight with a reputation of being good defensively as Fury only allowed 6 punches to be connected against and Opponents only landed 19 percent against Usyk.
The opening was close as Usyk landed lefts to the body, Fury jabbing and keeping distance. Fury landed 9 punches while throwing 37 punches while Usyk landed 8 of 18 so Usyk was more accurate, close round I gave it Usyk, but others gave it to Fury.
In the second round, Usyk landed overhand left to start round with body shots, he looks aggressive whereas Fury is jabbing. Fury landed a right to the body, but Usyk landed body shots. The last seconds of the round say a Usyk combo landed but Fury landed an upper cut to the body. Usyk answered with body shots and Fury ends the round with an upper cut. I had the round for Usyk, 20-18. According to CompuBox, Usyk landed 50 percent of his power shots as he landed 14 power shots.
Usyk opened the third with body shots, but Fury pivoted with a nice right. Usyk using head movement trying to avoid Fury’s jabs, but Fury landed solid jabs. Usyk went to the body, to tire the bigger Fury as the round ended. Again, another close round as Fury avoided being cornered but Usyk is not letting Fury circle without pressuring him. Fury also landed his combinations. I had the round for Usyk and had Usyk up 30-27. The round was close and could have gone for Fury.
Fury landed body shots and more active in the fourth round as Usyk looked for a combination but missed with a straight left. Usyk landed a nice lead left and Fury nails with an upper cut that has Usyk off balance Fury landed body shots and forced Usyk to cover up. Usyk closed the distance but got nailed from the long upper cut. Fury did a little clowning, but Usyk kept his cool. Fury won this round and had it 39-37 for Usyk.
Fury caught Usyk with a jab as the fifth round opened and Usyk looked to find angles to land his right hook. Fury landed a good right and left hook to the body and Fury pressured Usyk. Usyk 48-47 but this is close bout so the score could be reversed.
The sixth round began with Usyk back to pressure tactic and Fury landed four punch combinations and then tied up his opponent. Fury takes the round and scores the fight 57-57 even as we go into the second half. Fury appeared to be prepared to impose his will on the smaller Usyk. Fury landed 20 punches in the sixth round and had a 58-35 edge in landed punches from the fourth to the sixth round.
Usyk landed 13 punches and more accurately in the seventh round and took the round as he fired a 1-2 downstairs but peppering shots from Fury and tried to muscle Usyk to the ropes. After seven I have Usyk up by 67-66 but others have Fury in the lead.
In the eighth round Usyk landed twice as many punches 16 to 8 and 12 of those punches power shots. Usyk landed a three-punch cleanly and followed that to the body. This is the best Usyk best round of the fight and I had it 77 to 75 rounds for Usyk but cautioned myself in scoring this is a close fight. Fury is cut opened.
In the ninth round, Usyk continues his domination of the previous as he landed a right hand downstairs. Fury landed a body shot and moved forward but he is nailed by a left from Usyk that staggered Fury. Usyk pursue the advantage and Fury is reeling around the round. A knockdown is called as referee says the rope help Fury up and this is a 10-8 round 87-83 on my card.
Usyk starts the tenth round on the attack as Fury resilience is put the test. Usyk punches are getting through Fury defenses and his punches, in particular his left and Usyk left hand near the end of the round forced Fury to reel away the round . 97-92 on my card and I am observing that others have the fight closer, but they all show Usyk in the lead with two rounds left. In the tenth round, Usyk landed 16 punches with 13 of those shots power shots and he is accurate with those power shots.
The eleventh round saw Usyk landed body shots and walking down Fury, something I didn’t expect as the smaller Usyk was the more dominant fighter at this stage of the fight and Fury ate flush overhead at the bell. 107-101 with one more round. Fury needed a knockout on my card to win.
The twelfth round began some grappling out of the gate. Usyk moved forward jabbing but even in the final round, Fury’s head movement and defensive skills and both fighters are landing go punches as Usyk landed overhead lefts, but Fury countered with hard right. The final round went to Fury, and I have it 116-111 but there were some swing rounds in the first three rounds that could have gone either way.
And the scorecard was 115-112 and 114-113 for Usyk and One judge had it 114-113 for Fury so a split decision of a good fight for the Ukrainian fighter. Most observers agreed with me that Usyk won but I will admit I had it a wider margin.

This was close fight as Usyk laned 170 punches to Fury 157 punches and he landed more power shots 122-95. Overall, he was the more accurate puncher as he landed nearly 42 percent of his fight while Fury only landed 32 percent. Overall, Usyk landed more punches in 7 of the rounds. I had the third round for Usyk, but Fury could easily have won that round and while many of us gave Fury the final round, this round could have gone to Usyk as he landed 18 punches to Fury 10 punches.
From the fourth round through the sixth round, Fury dominated those bouts as he landed 58 punches to 35 but a close seventh round saw a Usyk domination of the eighth round through the eleventh round where he landed 69 punches to only 40 punches. The smaller Usyk was able to put the pressure against Fury and while Fury is a good jabber and he did out jab Usyk, Usyk dominated power shots and as he did with Joshua, he came on strong in the later rounds.

CompuBox data shows how much stronger Usyk was in the second half of the fight as he landed more and cleaner punches.

Usyk also was more effective with his combination punches as he had 42.5 percent efficiency versus Tyson Fury 34.1 percent. Fury is a slick boxer for a big man, but Usyk is a pretty good defensive fighter as well. The difference was that Usyk was able to pressure Fury and wear him down. Oleksandr Usyk has accomplished that no heavyweight since Lennox Lewis, he is the undisputed Heavyweight champion and Fury is ready for rematch as he wants one more shot at Usyk. This was a good fight worthy of two great champions.
MMA VS BOXING
Boxing was once part of American landscape as big boxing matches competed with Baseball, Football and even basketball for the attention of American sports fans. Muhammad Ali could sell more newspapers than the Boston Celtics in the mid 1960’s till near the end of the 1970’s. Today Boxing is a second-tier sport, relegated to rarely mention on most sports network. There are times that ESPN won’t even cover their boxing matches they broadcast, and they are probably the last cable network that televises boxing as most boxing is going the way of streaming and even Showtime last year said adios to boxing.
MMA has challenged boxing as the leading combat sports and for many fans, surpassed it. There is no doubt in this writer’s mind that MMA has done a better job of marketing its sports than boxing. Buffalo Wild Wings in Cedar Rapids Iowa will feature the UFC pay for view and when they do, they fill the bar/restaurant, and I can’t even remember the last time they ever did a boxing match PPV.
Depending what data you use to judge popularity, there is no doubt there are data that shows that MMA is becoming more popular. Most popular PPV event was Mayweather versus Pacquiao which drew nearly 5 million buys but that was in 2015 and while many boxing PPV appears to do was well as many MMA events, there are other ways to view the popularity of a sport in today’s world.
In social media and in google trends shows that there is more interest in the MMA. During 2021 UFC had a TV global reach of 259 million which placed it ninth and just below the NFL and NBA.
- Tokyo Olympics 2020 — 1.47 billion
- UEFA EURO 2020 — 741 million
- UCL — 530 million
- ONE Championship — 406 million
- F1 — 368 million
- Bundesliga — 345 million
- NFL — 338 million
- NBA — 307 million
- UFC — 259 million
- EPL — 251 million
When it came to social media video views just as Facebook, YouTube, Instagram and Tik, UFC ranked fifth among major sporing
- NBA — 14.55 billion views
- ONE Championship — 13.84 billion views
- UEFA Champions League — 10.10 billion views
- NFL — 7.74 billion views
- UFC — 6.64 billion views
- F1 — 5.50 billion views
- MLB — 3.79 billion views
- EPL — 3.03 billion views
- UEFA EURO 2020 — 2.25 billion views
- MotoGP — 1.91 billion views
*Facebook, Instagram, YouTube and TikTok
Blacks have the most interest in the combat sports including boxing and MMA followed by Hispanics
- Black: 52%
- Hispanic: 50%
- Other: 37%
- White: 30%
In a 2023 study with over 2,000 respondents, the middle age group 35 to 44 showed the most interest in combat sports including UFC with the 18-34 following close behind. In another study, the mixed martial arts targeted audience representing millennials made up the majority of fanbase with 41%. This represents a growing audience in the future.
Money is variable in both MMA and boxing and is dependent on factors including popularity, sponsors, and the match up. Boxers have the opportunity to earn more, but overall MMA fighters have a better average income.
The UFC payout scheme means a fighter can earn between 10,000 and 3,000.00 dollars and there is additional bonus like fight of the night which can net fighters 50,000 dollars and there is extra money from sponsors. For many boxers, they start out with 200 to 1,000 dollars per fight and for many young fighters, their first ten fights will net little but on the other hand, Floyd Mayweather received millions of dollars in payouts and Canelo Alveraz is another who gets a nice pay out when he fights.
In boxing, the average income is between 35 to 40,000 and the average UFC fighter can earn close to 150,000. Boxing professional are paid per fight with the manager negotiating money and arranging opponents. Many boxers can even earn only 200 dollars per fight, and many have other jobs, plus any injures in boxing impacts their ability to earn income.
Those at the top of the boxing world, the earnings can astronomical, and one example Floyd Mayweather took 150 million dollars when he fought Manny Pacquiao and Manny got a cool 100 million dollars and others on the card made considerably less. Boxers contribute to their insurance, travel and training plus their trainers get a percentage of their income and a boxing manager in Nevada may obtain 33 percent of the take.
Take the case of Andy Ruiz who earned 7 million dollars when he defeated Anthony Joshua and earned 10 million dollars in the rematch. Here is the rest of story, the fight before he defeated Joshua, Ruiz earned 200,000 dollars!
Here are ten of the top boxers earning:
- Floyd Mayweather 1.1 billion
- George Foreman 300 million
- Oscar De Lay Hoya 200 million
- Manny Pacquiao 200 million
- Lennox Lewis 135 million
- Sugar Ray Leonard 120 million
- Vitali Klitschko 65 million
- Anthony Joshua 65 million
- Muhammad Ali 50 million
- Marvin Hager 45 million
Here are ten of the top MMA fighters
- Conor McGregor 15,082,000
- Alistair Overeem 9,569, 500
- Khabib Nurmagomedov 8,680,000
- Anderson Silva 8,112,000
- Michael 7,135,000
- George St. Pierre 7,037,000
- Jon Jones 7,025,000
- Mark Hunt 6,304, 000
- Donald Cerrone 6,155,000
- Junior Dos Santos 5,970,000
As mentioned, UFC fighters earn money during fights including bonus for fight of the Night, performance of the night, sponsors just as Reebok add money to the fighters pocket as they wear the sponsors equipment and get a payout from them. UFC fighters sign a contract for x amounts of fights and pay a fixed amount for every fight they participate inside the Octagon. UFC helps with training expenses.
If you compare the top earnings from the top boxers to their MMA counterpart, they earn far more but the average MMA fighter is earning more than their boxing counterpart and there is less of gap between the top fighters and those below them in the MMA than in boxing.
Which leaves for combat fighters choices and why MMA is becoming more attractive. If you are wrestler, martial artist or like Holly Holm, a boxer, MMA can match your skills and you can add the others. A wrestler can learn to box or kick, a martial artist can learn to grapple unless he or she also has judo or other ground techniques, and a boxer can learn to kick and grapple like Holm. So, MMA is designed for athlete with multiple combat skills and the pay may be better. So, boxing may have a money problem where young boxers may go poor before they become good.
Another aspect was that UFC continued to have programs during Covid while many boxing events were canceled so that MMA made a lot of ground and with ESPN support, UFC has a major network backing it. Boxing has a few fights on ESPN but for the most part you have to have streaming services like DAZN to watch matches and many bouts are now PPV, but boxing needs more exposure.
Can Boxing rebuild itself within a new generation? My own suggestion begins with boxing promoters ensuring that young fighters not only have good coaching but help income that will mean some of the elites fighter give up some of their income for the better good to help build the next generation. Another advantage is that UFC is the premier mixed martial arts division and if you are the UFC champion, you are the champion whereas WBO, IBF, WBA, and WBC have their own champions and we have can have as many as 68 champions and I doubt the top boxing writers could list who is champion in each of these sanctioning body.
Dana White of UFC has proved to be superior in promoting his sport than the main promoters of boxing who seem to think of the next big fight but not beyond that.
